Three Simple Steps to Get Your Connecticut Medical Marijuana Card

Getting your Connecticut medical marijuana card involves a short, structured process built around both a medical evaluation and a state registration step.

Step 1: Get Certified by a Registered Practitioner

Book an appointment with an MD/PA/APRN who is a licensed doctor in Connecticut. The professional will look into your condition and your medical background to see if you have any of the conditions that Connecticut has approved.

Step 2: Register With the State

If found eligible, you will be required to register yourself using Connecticut’s official Medical Marijuana Program website portal. You will need to provide a copy of your identification and proof of residency in Connecticut.

Step 3: Start Shopping at Licensed Dispensaries

After your registration is confirmed, you will be able to buy from Connecticut’s licensed dispensaries as a registered medical marijuana user.

Qualifying Conditions for a Connecticut Medical Marijuana Card

While other states leave the certification process entirely up to the discretion of the practitioner, Connecticut, on the other hand, has an established list of conditions that would qualify as debilitating. The list includes 40 different conditions for adults and 11 conditions for minors. Since its inception in 2012, the list has significantly increased in size and now comprises several different conditions, including the following:

  • Chronic Pain – Pain lasting for at least six months, due to some underlying condition, which cannot be managed using other therapies.
  • PTSD – Acknowledged as one of the qualifying conditions.
  • Cancer – Also covers symptoms and adverse side effects related to cancer treatment.
  • Epilepsy – Also other types of seizures.
  • Parkinson’s Disease & Glaucoma – Included in the original set of qualifying conditions.
  • Other Conditions – Such as multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome with chronic pain, and neuropathy causing spasticity.

Please note: The state board of physicians meets twice a year to evaluate applications for additional conditions; hence, it is advisable to look at the list published on the Department of Consumer Protection website.

Exclusive Benefits of a Connecticut Medical Marijuana Card

There are several clear benefits to being a registered medical patient compared to buying cannabis for recreational purposes. Regarding the costs that come with regular cannabis consumption as a medical patient, several advantages should be noted within a year:

  • Higher Purchase Limit – As a registered patient, you can purchase 5 ounces in 30 days, which is much higher than the 1.5-ounce limit for public possession for an adult-use consumer.
  • Tax Exemptions – With the registration as a medical cannabis consumer, you can receive an exemption from cannabis excise tax, municipal cannabis tax, and state sales tax.
  • Personal Growth – If you are 18 years old or above and a registered medical patient (or a caregiver), you can grow cannabis personally up to 6 plants (3 mature and 3 immature) with a total number of 12 plants per household.
  • Lower Age Requirement for Qualification – To become a registered medical cannabis patient, your age should be below 18, and you need a parent/guardian to be your registered caregiver, who will confirm the qualification to two physicians.
  • Access to More Potent Product Formats – Medical patients will be able to access more potent product forms that may not be available to adult-use consumers.
